Susan Makete, 22 years old
from Johannesburg, South Africa in Neerpelt, Belgium

Susan comes from one of the poorest townships around Johannesburg where unemployment is 98% and lives alone with her mother which she helps a lot. She says they have been through difficult moments, but she has learnt a lot from these obstacles. She would not be the girl she is today, hadn’t she been through this. The school, she is going to, is renowned for its difficult teaching conditions, they run a variety of outreach projects, one of which is handing out food parcels to the poorest families. Susan is successful in class and is a very active participant in the school’s life. She is a very positive person, self confident, has many friends and likes to spend time with them. In her spare time she enjoys dancing and singing. Above all she likes poetry which she says helps her express her feelings. Her mother works 2 days a week as a domestic helper.

Susan's testmonial about her stay in Belgium

I think that it is really excellent to want to know more about the diversity of cultures, not only in one’s home country but also all over the world. It gets a person to be open-minded and view the world from a different angle. Getting to know the people around is exactly where the intelligence of a person originates and the beginning of a whole range of new thoughts which more mature and logical especially for a seventeen year old youngster. I really wish to make the most out of my experience in Flanders. It really costs a fortune for a high school girl from a township to go to a country as far as Belgium and I think it is going to be a little bit strange, for me and some of the people that I owe my beings to, if I mess-up such huge opportunity . I also believe that it will have a really good impact in my life especially a lot later in life, when I am independent and having to take more responsibilities. When I come back I will be having friends who will be coming to watch the 2010 world cup in South Africa. The feeling of visiting Belgium is thrilling!!! A big thank you to InterNations and AFS who enabled me living this great experience!

Luis Rodriguez, 20 years old
from Santiago, Chile in Charlestown, USA

Luis lives in a small two-room house which he shares with his parents and his younger sister. He works some Sundays in a newspaper stand to earn some money. He is an intelligent young man, simple, cheerful and very sociable. Luis enjoys practicing various sports and he is particularly interested in football. He is a motivated student and has big expectations about his future, even though he knows it could be more difficult for him to achieve them. In addition to his school studies, he is studying English at language school on Saturday nights. One of his expectations from participating in an exchange program is to improve his English. Luis has never had a chance to travel abroad and experience another culture. Without a scholarship it was unrealistic for his family to provide him with such an opportunity. The InterNations – AFS Scholarship has given him an excellent opportunity to spend a semester in the USA in Charlestown, Rhode Island, where he lives in a local family and attends a regular school with his American peers.

Penny Ntshingila, 21 years old
from Soweto, South Africa in Italy

Penny comes from Soweto, South Africa, where she lives with her mother and younger sister. She is a sociable and friendly young lady. She mostly helps her mother with chores during the week and does her homework, there isn't time for hobbies. She attends church service regularly on a Sunday and has a large group of friends. Penny gets up early in the morning to bake and she sells her little cakes at school for extra income. Thanks to the InterNations - AFS Scholarship Penny spent two months in Italy, Naples with the family Taddei, Paolo and Fiorella. She went to Istituto Scholastico M. Pagano - Napoli, where she made a lot of friends that she is going to be in contact with. They were all very interested to learn more about South Africa.

Penny’s impression of her stay in Italy

When I left for Italy I had so many fears but I also had a positive attitude that I wanted to learn as much as possible about Italy, only to find out that my experience would be more than I expected. I will always cherish my experience from the beginning of my trip to the last day in Italy. I have learned and grown more than I had expected. The lifestyles from both countries are certainly different, but I managed to adapt to the change. I really felt like a part of the family I stayed with and to this day I know I have a family in Italy. I made friends so easily as if I was at home - just in a different school. Everyone in Italy I came in contact with was so warm - hearted and helpful. As an evidence to show that I was really at home I gained 5 kg, not to mention the food in Italy was extraordinary. Pasta, pizza, cheese and ice-cream all have an acquired taste.

In the process I had to write a newspaper article about my experience which I wish would never end. I am still waiting for the outcome of my newspaper article. As every day went by I never realized that my fantastic journey would come to an end, until my last week, when all my friends had a party for me. People were crying and giving speeches – I realized Italy became my life.

All the experiences, monuments, shops, restaurants, schools and special occasions I experienced in Italy will always be in my heart. Thank you AFS – InterNations for sponsoring my trip to Italy. If I could go back to Italy, I’d do it any day. Life in Italy is BELLA.
