Facts about Monrovia and Its Local Economy

Situated on the Atlantic Coast at Cape Mesurado, Monrovia is Liberia's political, cultural and financial center. With a tropical climate, it comprises several districts, with the older part of the city at the end of the peninsula, the market district of Waterside as well as a large, natural harbor, the Freeport of Monrovia, to the north. The economy revolves around the port and there is also an airport, Spriggs Payne Airport, around four miles from the city center. The city's historic buildings include the Liberian National Museum and the Masonic Temple, while there are several beaches and two sports arenas, the Antoinette Tubman Stadium and the Samuel K Doe Sports Complex.
