Film Night: Raphael - The Prodigy of Perfection (documentary)
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) was a prolific Italian painter and architect who was born in Urbino in Protected content . A contemporary of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael's artwork is considered part of the trinity of Great Masters during the period of High Renaissance (a period which immediately predates Mannerism) which emphasizes idealistic beauty with proportion and balance. He was heavily influenced by a trip to Florence early in life and especially by the realistic (human) physical forms drawn/painted by Michelangelo who was 30 years his senior.
Raphael did not lead the life of a poor artist as his talent was highly appreciated during his lifetime and he was very well-connected to the Vatican. He is probably best known for his series of "Madonnas", including the Sistine Madonna; and for his large figure frescoes e.g. Scuola di Atene ("The School of Athens") in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Palace of the Vatican in Rome. He died in Rome in Protected content the age of just 37 after a brief and unspecified illness.
There is a small entry charge for this 60 minute screening.
