Dear photographers it’s time to take the camera and explore one of the most beautiful scenario in Tuscany at a few kilometers from Siena, a great example of the gothic style in Italy: the Abbey of San Galgano. The remains of this abbey, with Latin cross plan, covered in travertine and bricks, and with the sky as roof are magical and fascinating.
The abbey is the first gothic church built in Tuscany, between Protected content Protected content the Cistercian monks in honor of Galgano Guidotti (San Galgano), a nobleman knight native of Chiusdino, that here passed in hermitage the last years of his life.
Unfortunately the nearby lands were devastated by mercenary bands and, at the end of the 15th century, the monks moved to Siena. In Protected content , a lightning struck the bell tower, which collapsed onto the roof and after a few years the church was deconsecrated.
The Abbey of San Galgano conserves still today, although the damages of the time and perhaps just thanks to its evocative aspect of ruins, a solemn magnificence that leaves to realize the ancient beauty, and is a magical place to take pictures as the light go through every single window or crack. A few hundred meters from the ruins, on a hill, stands the Eremo of Montesiepi, a small chapel filled with frescoes where the famous Sword in the Stone is guarded. Legend says that Galgano Guidotti led a dissolute life until he converted to Christianity. To symbolize the abandonment of his life as a knight, Galgano plunged his sword into a stone. We will visit the abbey and its surroundings with characteristics villages, beautiful hills and Sangiovese vines to enjoy the view, the history, and some good food.

We will leave from Florence at 10 am to arrive at San Galgano around 11.30 am, enjoy the visit with a break for lunch in a typical restaurant in the area. After lunch we will visit Chiusdino, a medieval village in the Val di Merse. The number of participants depends from the car availability, so please let us know if someone is coming by car and is willing to offer a ride.
