The Tausi Taarab Orchestra is the only all-female ensemble in Zanzibar. The women who make up the group not only sing, but also play all the instruments. Just over a decade ago, it was absolutely taboo for women in the predominantly Muslim culture of Zanzibar to play an instrument in public. Women performed only as singers in men's orchestras, such as the legendary Bi Kidude. This all changed with Mariam Hamdani, the first woman from Zanzibar to work as a journalist for the Russian news agency TASS. In Protected content founded the Tausi Taarab Orchestra, the first all-female group in the tradition of the classical Taarab style, revolutionising this very traditional genre.

Taarab is a mixture of styles that reflect the diverse cultures of Zanzibar that come together in Swahili society. It combines elements from African, Arab, Indian and European cultures of the indigenous people, former rulers, immigrants, travellers and colonial masters. On the instrumental side, the Arabic qanun and oud, violin, cello and accordion have been integrated into this musical form to form a delightful mix that should not be missed.

The evening will open with a film about the Tausi Taraab Orchestra (7.30 pm). The concert will start at 8.45 pm.
