Seeking to animate their bereaved marriage, Anne (Toni Collette) and Bob (Harvey Keitel) go to live in Paris, the city of love. To inaugurate the new residence, they decide to make a dinner for twelve high society people. But, before the guests arrive, Anne discovers that there are thirteen seats on the table. Terrified by the number of bad luck, she asks her employee, Maria (Rossy de Palma), to pose as a Spanish aristocrat to be fourteen guests. At dinner, Maria sits next to a refined English art agent and, after a few more drinks, both are attracted, initiating an affair that her employer will try to stop at all costs.
