Curator Talk: in the Eye of the Storm, Modernism in Ukraine
Curator Katia Denysova explores the groundbreaking modernist art made in Ukraine between Protected content the Protected content , the most comprehensive UK exhibition to date showing modernist art in Ukraine.
Highlighting a period of bold artistic experimentation, against a backdrop of profound socio-political upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, the exhibition brings together 65 works, many of which are on loan from the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Denysova will discuss the range of artistic styles and cultural identities that existed in Ukraine during this period, providing a closer look at the works of such artists as Kazymyr Malevych, Sonia Delaunay, Alexandra Exter and El Lissitzky, as well as lesser-known figures like Oleksandr Bohomazov and Mykhailo Boichuk.
Katia Denysova is an art historian and curator, specialising in Ukraine’s modern art. She completed her PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in Protected content is currently a research fellow at the University of Tübingen in Germany.
Katia is the co-curator of the travelling exhibition In the 'Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine' (winner of the Protected content Exhibition of the Year Award for the show at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid) and the co-editor of the accompanying catalogue (Thames & Hudson, Protected content .
