Dear all,

here's a new adventure for our group!
This time we'll leave Tuscany to discover a really unusual spot in Emilia-Romagna, not far from Bologna, in the mountain chain of the Apennines.

Leaving from Campolo we will climb up to the panoramic top of Montovolo, well known since ancient times as a place of worship and know characterized from the beautiful Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione.
As we come back down, we will pass through the small villages of Sterpi and Predolo and eventully arrive at Scola, one of the better preserved medieval settlements in the area , from where we will come back to Campolo.

Here's the characteristics of the trail:

Total length: about 8 km
Total climb altitude: about Protected content
Difficulty level: Medium
Actual travel time (without stops): Approximately 3,5 hours
Duration: daytrip (packed lunch by the participants).
Required equipment: Trekking boots, water.
Recommended Equipment: Trekking sticks, clothing suitable for the season and weather.

In the afternoon, we will visit the castle Rocchetta Mattei (literally "small fortress Mattei").

It was built by the Count Cesare Mattei ( Protected content ) on the remains of an ancient medieval castle that belonged to Matilde di Canossa (a.k.a. Matilda of Tuscany).

In the beginning the Count was an army man, than a politician, than a science man, a scholar, a philanthropist and an entrepreneur. He personally directed the constuction of the castle "having on his command artisans of every trade".

The fusion of different architectural styles, such as the Medieval Gothic with the Moorish style, make the Rocchetta a mesmeric and fantastic place, full of small rooms very expertly decorated and linked together by a labyrinthine plan mixed together with lodges, spiral staircases and towers.

As usual, we will go out on a Saturday, to avoid traffic and crowds and also to have the possibility to rest the day after.

We will be together with an environmental guide, who will explain more about the flora, the fauna, the geology and the history of this place.

If you want to spend an adventurous, carefree day amidst nature, walk and take pictures together with a bunch a people who love doing the same, this is your opportunity!

I look forward to receiving your confirmations!
