Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and Pagliacci by Leoncavallo
At 14.00 on Sunday, 28th October Protected content my house in Bunnik

These two short operas, each lasting about an hour are usually performed together. In this Blu-ray recording made in Protected content are performed by the Teatro Real in Madrid accompanied by the Madrid Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jesus Lopez Cobos and directed by Giancarlo del Monaco.

These are two operas with a strong story, beautiful music and a performance with emotion.

Cavalleria Rusticana

A Sicilian village on Easter Sunday, Turiddu has become engaged to Santuzza, but he carries on his affair with Lola, his former lover. Santuzza is very affected by his behaviour and confesses to Mamma Lucia, Turiddu’s mother, that her son is unfaithful to her and is involved with Lola. Santuzza tries to persuade Turiddu to leave Lola and return to her, but he violently rejects her.. Enraged Santuzza tells Alfio, Lola’s husband, about Lola’s affair with Turidda. His honour offended, Alfio kills Turiddu in a knife fight.
Sung by Violetta Urmana and Vincenzo La Scola et al.

Pagliacci

Tonio, Beppe, Canio and his wife Nedda form a company of itinerant performers. One afternoon before their show opens, Tonio lets Canio know that his wife is seeing Silvio, a local man, who plans to escape with her that night. Taking advantage of the play’s plot, a one act farce about infidelity and jealousy, Canio tries to make Nedda reveal the name of her lover. The contemptuous attitude she shows towards him and the audience’s laughter at what they believe is part of the show, infuriates Canio so much that he pulls out a knife and stabs her on the stage. Silvio, who is in the audience, rushes to her aid but he also falls victim to Canio’s knife.

Sung by Vladimir Galouzine and Maria Bayo et al.

Together the two operas last 2 hours and 15 minutes. We shall have a break between the two operas. You will get a copy of the story.
