THE CRANES ARE FLYING (Cannes Palme d'Or winner)-- 35 mm print a
Lovely movie buffs -
Join me at the beautiful MFA for a movie screening. we'll meet at cafe across from theater before and find a place to continue the conversation after (museum will close).
Screening of rare 35 mm print of the only Soviet film to win the Cannes Palme d’Or, The Cranes Are Flying, a masterpiece on every level—direction, cinematography, acting, editing and soundtrack. Filmed in Protected content upended the tight controls and platitudes of the cinema industry in the USSR, and also left its mark internationally, especially for its mobile camerawork and expressive editing. That it did so despite being a war movie, defying all the expectations of rote patriotism and telling the stories of everyday, imperfect people touched by the maelstrom with subtlety and sympathy, is even more remarkable. In Russian with English subtitles.
tickets: Protected content
Film Protected content followed by a Q + A with David Patterson, Professor of Music, UMass Boston, and Anna Winestein, Executive Director, Ballets Russes Arts Initiative.
