Homo Deus. A Brief History of Tomorrow (Yuval Noah Harari)
Based on outlining in detail our past and current achievements, Harari examines possibilities for the future of Homo sapiens. He postulates that during this century, humanity makes ever greater attempts to upgrade from ‘Homo sapiens’ (wise men) to ‘Homo deus’, attempting to gain immortality and God-like powers. Throughout the book, Harari describes various ways that this ambition might be realised.
The great differentiator between humans and animals is our capacity to give meaning to the world and effectively organise in large numbers for a common purpose. Technological advancements may threaten the continued ability of humans to give meaning our their lives. And what would happen then?
