Why Homer Matters
Most of us have heard about the Iliad and the Odyssey, the oldest epic poems in the Western canon. A recent book about them, The Mighty Dead: Why Homer Matters, by Adam Nicolson, looks at Homer from different perspective - his history, his poetry, and especially his meaning for us: does Homer matter, and why? The book is superbly written, and combines scholarly rigour and narrative skill with the author's personal search for Hmer, in the places which have a direct connections with the times described in the two poems.
