Love and Obscurity
Last December we had some conversations, by email and nin Facebook, about love literature - from the so-called chick-lit to serious love stories like Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary. I am proposing a conversation about the way love is portrayed in literature. We have been there before a few times - with Milkman and with Pride and Prejudice, for example. This time I will talk a bit about Jude the Obscure, by Thomas Hardy - a rather dark book, beautifully written, which apparently ended Hardy's fiction writing because of the negative reactions.
