The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance Protected content a family memoir by British ceramicist Edmund de Waal. De Waal tells the story of his family, the Ephrussi, once a very wealthy European Jewish merchant and banking dynasty, centred in Odessa, Vienna and Paris, and peers of the Rothschild family. The Ephrussi lost almost everything in Protected content the Nazis confiscated their property in Vienna, and were unable to recover most of their property after the war, including priceless artwork; however, an easily hidden collection of Protected content netsuke miniature sculptures was saved, tucked away inside a mattress by Anna, a loyal maid at Palais Ephrussi in Vienna during the war years. Originally the miniature sculptures were purchased by Charles Ephrussi in Paris and came as a gift to Charles's cousin, Viktor Ephrussi (based in Vienna at the time of the gift). The collection of netsuke has been passed down through five generations of the Ephrussi family, providing a common thread for the story of its fortunes from Protected content 2009.

The narration describes the lengthy research of the book`s author into various - long deceased - family members as well as providing a vivid portrait of the life of the high society in which the successful members of the Ephrussi family (originally Sephardic Jews from Berdichev, Ucrania) moved in the Paris and Vienna of the XIX and early XX centuries.
