Henryk Sienkiewicz is best known for his historical novel Quo Vadis; With Fire and Sword is also a historical novel, about the Protected content Uprising, a revolt of the Cossacks living in the steppes between Poland and Russia, in what now is Ukraine. The steppe, and the cities within it and on the margins of it, were like a sea with no definite borders, where Ruthenes and Cossacks lived under the overlordship of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The uprising brought the Cossacks, with their allies the Crimean Tatars, against the Commonwealth and was the start of a succession of wars which almost destroyed the Polish kingdom.

The book has six main characters, only one of whom did exist, and is surprisingly balanced; it makes one understand the sheer complexity of life and power in a land with few natural borders, divided by ethnicity and religion.
