FILM SCREENING: Winnie
Winnie Madikizela Mandela was one of the most misunderstood and intriguingly powerful contemporary female political figures. Her rise and seeming fall from grace, bear the hallmarks of epic tragedy. This film pieces together and properly considers her life and contribution to the struggle to bring down Apartheid, with intimate insight from those who were closest to her and with testimony from the enemies who sought to extinguish her radical capacity to shake up the order of things.
Winnie rode the tumultuous violence of a life of struggle far from the safety of exile abroad, while her husband was kept in jail for 27 long years. She was the barometer for the political temperature in the country and brushed patriarchal and conservative conventions aside, within her own culture, by keeping a finger on the pulse of the youth and by leading from the front.
So, how did Winnie come to be so demonized in the media? When did she become a controversial fixture of South African politics, and when did the passionate respect she attained among the people of South Africa become, what many considered, a paradox?
