Day trip to another city
Tampere is the third largest city in Finland, located 170km from Helsinki, between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Since the two lakes differ in level by 18m, the rapids linking them, Tammerkoski, have been an important power source throughout history. Tampere is called the "Manchester of Finland" for its industrial past as the former centre of Finnish industry, earning it its Finnish nickname "Manse". The industrial heritage is visible in the old red-brick factory buildings, and still today there is an operational paperboard mill right in the city centre!
One day is not enough to see everything, but the centre is compact and walking around we will see the main sights. In addition I propose visiting two museums:
- Moomin Museum, the world's only: "The one-of-a-kind exhibition design takes the visitor on a journey into a land of fantasy: you can crawl into the magician’s hat, stand in a snowstorm on a glacier, and watch a fiery comet streak across the night sky" The core of the collection consists of original illustrations by Tove Jansson for the twelve Moomin books she wrote and illustrated between Protected content 1977. The original illustrations and paintings reveal how her style of illustration evolved and how the characters changed from book to book.
- Vapriikki: Housed in the old Tampella factory hall. There are several exhibitions, out of which two of special interest: 1. "Tammerkoski Rapids" exhibition tells the story of how a small village grew into an industrial city 2. "Tampere Protected content exhibition tells about the Battle of Tampere, the largest, longest and bloodiest battle of the Finnish Civil War, a conflict for the leadership and control of Finland during the country's transition from a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire to an independent state in Protected content . fought between Reds and Whites.
