Fado Night in April
"Protected content Saudade weekend in April is dedicated to Portuguese fado and music from Cape Verde. We can hear saudade, that is longing, in both of them. At the same time, they convey strong emotions, joy and sorrow.
Gisela João ranks among the best interpreters of Portuguese fado in this decade. Her unique voice has been compared with the voice of the queen of fado, Amália Rodrigues, who passed away in Protected content . João fell in love with fado when she was a little girl and heard Rodrigues sing on the radio.
”I felt like she was singing about my life,” João says.
João was born in Barcelos in the North and she ended up singing in Lisbon, the birthplace of fado.
She had her breakthrough in Protected content , when she released her first solo album, Gisela João. The album was soon at the top of the lists in Portugal, and sold first gold and then platinum. João was awarded as the best new artist and the best solo singer in Portugal.
The singer, who has become internationally famous, respects fado traditions, but also dares to introduce a modern perspective. For João, fado is not just a musical style, but a whole way of life. ”It's like living in the midst of poems.”
