Bedhaya Sapta is a traditional dance that originated in Sultan Agung's Yogyakarta during the Mataram Kingdom (17th century). It has been said that the Sultan was inspired by Ratu Kidul, Queen of the sea. Later the dance was re- created by Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX and included many cultural references but telling the same story about Sultan Agung,s life.

Bedhaya Sapta is still performed at the Keraton and has inspired a Multitude of artsworks because its seven dancers convey philosophical guidance and mystical sufism through move ment, rhythm, taste and expression.
