Book Discussion of "The Double"+"White Nights" by F Dostoyevsky
This year marks Protected content since the birth of Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky ( Protected content ). Therefore, I welcome a suggestion by one of our regular book club attendees to discuss one of Dostoyevsky's short stories.
Virginia Woolf describes Dostoyevsky's works as 'seething whirlpools, gyrating sandstorms, waterspouts which hiss and boil and suck us in. They are composed purely and wholly of the stuff of the soul. Against our wills we are drawn in, whirled round, blinded, suffocated, and at the same time filled with a giddy rapture.'
I have picked out "The Double" (first published in Protected content and "White Nights" (published two years later (~80pages)).
As usual you are welcome to read in whichever language suits you best, however the discussion will be held in English. Also note that I have listed two books for discussion but if you only manage to read through one of the two, please do join our meeting anyway. We'd love to hear about your reading experience and your views.
Watch this space for discussion questions which will be posted prior to meet-up.
