Sophocles’ Philoctetes - An Ancient Greek Play In English
The English Theater Leipzig dives into the ancient Greek tale of pain, compassion and duty. Updated by translator and director Abigail Akavia and featuring an original musical score produced by Matthew Hendershot, this lesser-known masterpiece of Sophocles asks us to consider our obligations to ourselves and to our comrades. Confronting us with our aggressive aspiration to win at any cost, it raises questions such as, what does the collective owe an individual when they are no longer ‘useful’? Should we sacrifice our moral integrity for social acceptability? Sophocles’ play puts compassion in the limelight, suggesting its centrality to human communication as well as its unforeseen ethical consequences.
