Zoom on French Varieties: Grenache
Grenache (or Garnacha) is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world (5th for reds). In France, it is mainly associated with the wines of Cotes de Rhône and Southern France. It is often used as a blending component, adding body and sweet fruitiness to a wine. But you can also get a rare bottle of monocepage from the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
I suggest you get yourself a bottle of an AOP Maury Sec with Protected content % grenache in it as I will do. It will give us a good possibility to evaluate the character of this very popular grape and learn about this upcoming AOP on the side!
ps . if you want to taste the same bottle as I do (you don't have to !) , I have posted the picture of the Maury sec I got - Vers le Nord / Mas Amiel at Apogée du vin. Grenache noir 90% with 92 points from Parker / Protected content RVF.
