A Brief Walk through the Origins of Ankara
Hi everyone - Just a reminder that tomorrow is the event. Hopefully starting it a little later will result in more people being able to make it.
Tomorrow is supposed to be clear and sunny but somewhat cold, especially at the start. I suggest a coat that you can remove and something warm underneath.
We will have time to enjoy some of the places as we pass. I want to walk around Hamamönü some to appreciate the restored architecture of the late Ottoman/early Republic era. We may have some coffee and a pastry before starting toward the Kale.
After Hamamönü, we will pass through Samanpazarı, with its copper and other shops. We will have time to explore there a little, and maybe another coffee (this is Ankara!). Then to the Kale and past some of the interesting museums (not long enough to go in).
From there, I have done a little homework, because the next stop will be the two original "homes" of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament), which have a great deal of history (we just passed Republic Day). Finally across to the old train station, and a final coffee (or more) stop at their nice outdoor café.
We hope a lot of you make it. We have people from 10 countries signed up. It should be an interesting opportunity to talk with others as we walk, but remember, COVID is still quite strong, so please, please keep on your masks and adhere to social distancing.
