Mt. Longonot National Park Hike
Join us for a fun, challenging hike with spectacular views at Mt. Longonot National Park. Mt.Longonot is a dormant volcano located southeast of Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley, 60km northwest of Nairobi. It is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service as part of Mount Longonot National park. Its name is derived from Maasai name Oloonong’ot meaning ‘Mountain many steep ridges’
The first trail is from the gate to the crater rim, a 3.1 km trail that takes an hour or so depending with your pace. Some parts are challenging. Take it slow, stop and enjoy the views. The trail then continues in a 7.2 km loop encircling the crater. The whole trip takes (13.5 km) about 5 hours allowing for necessary rest breaks - parts of the trail are heavily eroded and very steep. A unique feature is the thick forest that lies within the crater of the mountain. The crater rim also provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha.
you need to be relatively fit to do the whole circuit. It is rewarding enough to end your hike at the crater rim, If you are not fit, enjoy the views and descend slowly.
