we take the Protected content
famous for a remarkable prehistoric stone-tool factory discovered in Protected content . Extending over 5km on both sides of the Awash River, it encompasses numerous sites dating back 1.7 million years. A series of explanatory panels are posted around the site and a hut displays some well-captioned finds, including the tools used by homo erectus/homo sapiens who once inhabited the area. Around 4km south of Melka Kunture is Ethiopia’s southernmost rock-hewn church. Protected content Century Adadi Mariam. It’s a semi-monolithic church (only 3 of its 4 sides are detached from the surrounding strata). Adadi Mariam was the work of King Lalibela, but never finished. If you don’t have time to see the Tigray or Lalibela churches, this is a good alternative. Continue to Tiya, the most important of several stelae clusters in the country containing 36 ancient stelae (grave markers) which are probably tomb stones are listed as world heritage by UNESCO.
