Opera - Madame Butterfly
As promised, I am happy to offer one last opera for this year. This time we will see Puccini's Madame Butterfly. As usual, the seats are located in the Parkett section, best seats in the house for a pretty good price.
Read any review of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and you’re bound to find the words ‘sad’ and ‘beautiful’. While both are certainly true, sad doesn’t quite capture the essence an opera that is, at its heart, pure tragedy. Inspired by a short story written in Protected content , this opera, like all great art, holds a mirror up to society today and asks us to question what we see.
The story centres around an American soldier stationed in Nagasaki, Japan, who is offered a Geisha, as a bride. He agrees to the marriage, believing that this trivial formality is necessary in order to spend the night with her. The following day he leaves Japan and flies home to his fiancée in America.
Cio-Cio-San – Madame Butterfly - believing theirs to be a true love, remains faithful, greeting him on his return three years later with their son and her hopes that they will finally be together. Too late she realises that their marriage meant nothing to him and she has been dishonoured. In despair, she commits suicide. It is a powerful story that feels even more poignant in a current era rife with debate about misogyny, otherness, and privilege.
This production by Protected content features a striking stage design that uses colour, shadow and stark sets to great effect.
Seats are limited and prepayment is necessary to book a spot. You will receive payment details once you RSVP.
