South from Southport: Searching For Red Squirrels
We start in Southport. Protected content
The Sefton Coastal Footpath runs south of the Esplanade Car Park, around Victoria Park, before re-joining the coast proper and allowing us to head past Birkdale and Ainsdale.
The Sefton Coastal Footpath then heads towards Formby, passing nature reserves with a good view of the sea and the possibility of seeing a (rare) red squirrel. (More common: walkers, cyclists, golfers :) ).
From Formby it is easy to catch a Merseyrail train back into Liverpool, or back to Southport to pick up a car. People who have the motivation and time can walk to a station further on.
Distance: about 10.5 miles
Effort: easy - level Protected content , total ascent 71 m. Terrain is part tarred or concrete, but also sandy, grass, soil or gravel.
