Effective Altruism & Life Worth Living
Amaris Salon is a gathering of people around the table for mutual encouragement, enrichment, and inspiration to pursue a life worth living.
Today, more than at any previous time in history, the question of the good life—what makes for a flourishing life—is a pressing one. This question once came pre-answered—by culture, by religion, by tradition—but these days, we each have to ask and answer for ourselves: What is the good life? What does it mean to live a flourishing life? And what is a life worth wanting? These are difficult yet fundamental questions that require deep thought, reflection and conversation; we need one another’s help to ask and answer them well.
The Life Worth Living Series, adopted by the Life Worth Living Program developed at Yale University, is designed to help one another to reflect on these questions and to be encouraged in their own journey of a life worth living.
Our next topic is “Utilitarianism/Effective Altruism (Doing the most good you can through using both Head & Heart)”. We will explore Utilitarianism as how it is has been applied to the field of Altruism, namely, as in Effective Altruism, a growing body of thought on how we can accomplish the most good for the world given our limited time, energy, resources, and money. We will reflect on Effective Altruism in light of Peter Singer’s (Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University) Ted Talk on Effective Altruism, and the altruism as played out in the lives of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Jeff & Julia, a young couple in Boston, all of whom are making a difference in the world with their practice of effective altruism.
Please join us on the 30th of October for an evening of conversation on Life Worth Living & Effect Altruism.
