For those of us who don't get holidays in August, this is a nice day trip to get away from the city and see another part of Lazio.

The monastery at Montecassino was founded in 529, when St. Benedict built the first abbey of the Benedictine Order here. Since then, the site has been destroyed many times, most recently in Protected content the Battle of Monte Cassino. However, in the years that followed, the abbey was completely rebuilt and is now a landmark and popular tourist destination in southern Lazio.

*BUY YOUR OWN TRAIN TICKETS*

We will meet at Protected content Sorry about the early start, but there are only 3 buses each day from the train station and to take the later ones, we'll have to wait for an hour in Cassino.

If there are enough participants, we will have a tour of the old area and the museums in English, otherwise we can just enjoy exploring by ourselves.

The bus leaves for the train station at 1pm, though anyone wishing to remain longer, can take the 5pm bus instead.
