Visit to a Byzantine-Greek Monastery in ENGLISH
The abbey has an incredible history. Before the Great Schism, there were Basilian communities across the south of Italy, but Grottaferrata was the only one that managed to maintain communion with the Roman church and so was the only one able to survive.
Emperor Frederick II used it as his headquarters; Cardinal della Rovere (Pope Julius II) fortified it; Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and Cardinal Francesco Barberini both embellished it; Bernini designed (though didn't sculpt) the altarpiece and Domenichino painted the side chapel.
We will visit the monastery and the abbey museum with guide and art historian, Ilaria Pagani. THIS TOUR WILL BE IN ENGLISH
It's easy to reach Grottaferrata by bus from Anagnina (€2.20 return bus fare), followed by a 10-minute walk. If you are driving, and have spare seats, please consider taking others:-)
NB: If the group is large, there may be an additional €2 to rent the radio system.
