Time for brand new experience: the music of Sephardic Jews!
Marina Toshich with the band will play the songs of the Sephardic Jews and will sing in Ladino. There will also be references to related music styles of the Middle East.
Here are the links to some of her performances:
The story in the nutshell:
At the end of the 15th century, under the decrees of the kings of Spain and Portugal, Sephradi Jews were ordered to choose one of only three options:
1.to convert to Catholicism and therefore to be allowed to remain within the kingdom,
2.to remain Jewish and to be expelled by the stipulated deadline, or
3.to be summarily executed.
As a result of the Alhambra decree between 200,000 and 250,000 Jews converted to Catholicism and between one third and one half of Spain's remaining 100,000 non-converted Jews chose exile, with an indeterminate number returning to Spain in the years following the expulsion.
Those who chose exile have settled in North Africa, southern & eastern Europe and the Middle East. Their descendants are still called Sephardic (from Hebrew Sfarad - Spain).
As the number of seats is limited, so please arrive on time. I couldn't find any info either on museum website or on some other websites where to buy the ticktes so I assume we need to purchase them before the concert at the Museum. I will call their office tomorrow to get more info about it and will let you know!
See you on Friday,
