Winter swimming contest!
It's that time of year again. The air gets cold, the water freezes and thoughts turn to... outdoor swimming races? Why not!
This year the annual Finnish winter swimming championship takes place a little closer to home - Turku.
A 25 metre swimming pool is cut into the ice and up to Protected content swim against each other and the clock. There's freestyle, breaststroke, 4 person relay and even a "just jumping in the water" event for the kids. No wetsuits, gloves or shoes for this one, you'll wear your swimming costume, a warm hat and a determined expression :)
Is it a bit cold? Yes.
Will you feel it? Maybe, but you'll probably be too busy swimming fast to notice.
It's a good natured event with friendly competition, a great atmosphere and evening entertainment also if you're in need of further warming up afterwards.
The individual race entry fee is €35 for the Saturday breaststroke races. If we have enough entrants we can also consider the 4 x 25m relay race on Sunday, for which we'll need two male and two female swimmers. Registration and payment link can be found here:
Transport to Turku we'll figure out closer to the date, there are plenty of options from Helsinki. And if you're living in Turku already it's even easier :)
We'll arrange practice sessions well before February so there's plenty of time to get used to the cold water. Believe it or not it isn't as terrible as you may think. And it's good for your health too. Release your inner penguin!
So if you feel like challenging yourself and having a great story to tell when people ask for an example of crazy Finnish customs, why not give it a go?
But please, only sign up if you intend to actually swim! This event is for entrants only. Cheerleaders and spectators are of course welcome, but we'll have a separate event for that...
See you in the ice hole!
