Western Black Sea Wine-Tasting
the second part of the Black sea area will be dedicated to the western part.
This area to the West of the Black Sea, bisected by the majestic Danube, has the perfect climate, soil, and topography for wine-making – particularly aromatic whites and dark tannic reds.
Today we see wineries having great success with a fascinating combination of historic local grape varieties (like Mavrud and Babeasca Neagra), and sure-fire international cultivars such as Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc.
We will taste a variety of bottles, and learn all about the long history of grape-growing in the region – for example in Cucuteni-Trypillia, Thrace, and Dacia, notable ancient civilizations. In more recent times there were invasions by great empires, wars with Greece, the Soviet Union, and much more besides. The wonderful stories of the past also inform the current viticulture, of course.
There will be snacks, cheese, and bread to accompany the wines, and a fun quiz at the end!
