Grand Opening weekend General& Architecture Tours of New Central
Whether you choose to walk, bike, drive, or take transit to the Library, we’ve got you covered.
On November 3, Calgary Transit will be free from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm to help celebrate our opening, an opportunity made possible through the generous support of donors to Add In—the Campaign for Calgary’s Library, facilitated by the Calgary Public Library Foundation.
The new Central Library, located at Protected content SE, is one block east of the former Central Library building and just behind City Hall. Lane and road closures around the East Village are listed on the EV Experience website.
Public bike racks will be located on all sides of the building, and bus routes 1, 10, 69, 75, 102, 103, 117, 125, 126, 133, 151, 300, 302, 305, and Protected content within three blocks of the new Central Library. The closest CTrain stop is City Hall. Plan your route using the Calgary Transit trip planner.
Parking for new Central Library, Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, City Hall, and Arts Commons is available in the City Hall parkade accessible via 9 Avenue SE. There is also lots of street parking available in the East Village.
From entry ramps on the west side to an elevator on the east side, the Library is accessible for all. The outside elevator will be staffed and available 24 hours a day, allowing for easy passage through the archway, connecting people between East Village and City Hall.
Once inside, there are elevators, ramps, and stairways for visitors to move throughout the building. Elevators have braille buttons and an audible elevator signal, and stairs have tactile, contrasting colour warnings on the floor at the top of the flight.
Inside the new Central Library, two Listening Assistance systems for performances, lectures, and tours will be available:
One system uses portable FM transmitters and lightweight headphones or neckloops to support hearing aids.
One system uses technology to communicate with visitors’ Bluetooth-linked hearing aids. This system will also allow multiple languages to be streamed if translation is required.
