!DISCUSSION¡ Writing Gender in Nordic Literature!
We use gender in our speech and writing all the time, but sometimes doing so might be very tricky. Gender can be a carrier of sense and sensuality, or could harbour prejudice and political incorrectness.
To make things messier, gender expressions vary greatly from language to language and across cultures. Some languages are very neutral in that respect, some assign gender to nouns and adjectives, and some even gender-discriminate verb conjugation. Thus, handling gender in different languages or translating texts between them can be seriously complicated.
In connection to the International Women’s Day, this precarious and interesting topic will be discussed by a convention of poets: Lalo Barrubia, Leif Holmstrand, and Polina Kopylova. The talk will be centered around literature in the Nordic countries Finland and Sweden, and will be held in English.
The discussion will be garnished with reading of poems by the participants. :)
See you at the discussion!
