Yeti, Aliens and Illuminati: Conspiracy Theories
Who controls our minds? How does the world really work? Are politicians really a caste of malicious lizards?
In a hard-to-understand, complex world, with various interests and too many institutions to know, it is very easy to shape your viewpoint on the basis of a giant conspiracy that controls the world. However, this defies basic logic, as it is very difficult to coordinate even two humans, not to mention thousands of accomplices during hundreds of years.
Thus it’s interesting to ask ourselves – why do we believe in so many conspiracies? And are some of them true?
We’ll get together and with coffee or other beverage in hand talk to other human beings that are as passionate as ourselves about finding answers.
Some subjects we’ll touch on:
• The need for a simple narrative in a complex world
• What do conspiracy theories tell us about ourselves?
• Truth and post-truth
• Should we demand proof for what you are affirming?
Upon finishing the get-together, we will have understood the mechanisms that make us gravitate towards conspiracy theories and analysed the pros and cons of an evidence-based world.
We will meet at 7 PM, on the second floor of the cafe (large table). Ask for Jan at the entrance.
Everyone is welcome, together with their plus ones, ideas and perspectives.
• 7:00 – 7:30: Welcome and initial chat
• 7:20 – 9:50: Discussion in groups
• 9:50 – 10:00: Selfie time, close
