Data giants dominate the internet. They collect, filter and process this data, offering the people who disclose it little or nothing in exchange. These giants use centralized infrastructure to keep raw and processed data, exposing those who have given them personal data –sometimes inadvertently– to multiple security breaches. The danger is clear and present. Just recently, the Cambridge Analytica case exposed how this data can be used for sinister purposes. This dynamic has fueled ever-increasing profits for internet giants like Google and Facebook, while providing a source of income for millions around the globe. But blockchain technology will alter the model dramatically, ushering in a new era in data ownership, online anonymity and monetization. In this talk by Shajar Gleiser, we will discuss these matters and also learn how blockchain technology is shaping the Web 3.0.
