Our Social Selves-Leading With Empathy
“The biggest deficit that we have in our society and in the world right now is an empathy deficit. We are in great need of people being able to stand in somebody else’s shoes and see the world through their eyes.” – Barack Obama
Yet research in Neuroscience tells us that 98% of us have the ability to empathize, that our brains are wired for it. So why does it seem like judgment is more of our default way of thinking rather than empathy? We are living far below our empathic potential particularly, in the workplace where today’s rules-based, process-centric way of working makes it more difficult to cultivate empathy?
In this session, we will look to raise our awareness on biases that may lead us to be less empathic towards others. We will explore the impact of the digital age on empathy. And we will experience first-hand what it feels like to walk a mile in another’s shoes.
• Understand Social Pain vs Physical Pain from the brain’s vantage point
• Step into our Cognitive, Emotional and Physiological reaction to negative vs positive experiences
• Learn a brain-based model to identify negative and positive emotional triggers
• Understand the Cognitive and Social Biases that lead us to have low empathy towards another
• Gain perspective on empathy in the world of customer service
