Simon Boccanegra is an opera with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play Simón Bocanegra Protected content Antonio García Gutiérrez. It was first performed at Teatro La Fenice, Venice on March 12th, Protected content . Given the difficulties with the original plot, a revised version, with text changes by Arrigo Boito, was first performed at La Scala, Milan on March 24th, Protected content . It is this version, with its Council Chamber scene as the finale to Act I, that is usually given today.

In this opera, the undulating Verdi's music tells Simon Boccanegra and his daughter Maria Boccanegra's tortuous process of reunion. By rolling the historic scroll of the 13th century Genoa, this work also expresses the composer Verdi's yearning for peace. The composer wonderfully describes the vast sea of Genoa, and endows the sea with different musical colours in echo with ups and downs of storyline, characters’ situations and changes in the mood.
