Ringing in the Old New Year
This month, the InterNations GZ Food &Wine group invites you to celebrate “Old New Year” the Russian way! China’s Spring Festival may be just around the corner, but in Russia, winter celebrations are not over until Stary Novy God (Старый Новый год or “Old New Year”) is celebrated on January 14. Old New Year marks the beginning of the year according to the old Julian calendar (instead of the Gregorian calendar now used around the world for official records). In modern Russia, Old New Year is officially a working day, but many Russians still keep the tradition of celebrating it with a family gathering where they eat holiday treats and sing carols.
Join us this Saturday for Old New Year favorites, like mimosa salad and savory pancakes filled with salmon and mushrooms. Feeling adventurous? Try the vibrant pickled herring or beef tongue salad! Protected content
also offers hearty soups and other traditional favorites, like cabbage rolls, dumplings, and cottage cheese cakes for those just craving some winter comfort food.
If you’ll be joining us, please do take a minute to sign up here. Thank you! We look forward to seeing you!
