ABOUT THIS EVENT: This talk by Simon Landy revealing the twists, turns, and tensions of a little-known episode in Thai history which pitted Thailand’s renowned King Mongkut, Rama IV, against the first British consul, Charles Hillier. This talk will explain how this incident has continued to shape official Thai attitudes towards foreign ownership of land to the present today.

Simon Landy MBE has spent over 40 years immersed in the worlds of Anglo-Thai culture and business. After graduating from Cambridge University, Simon lectured at the National University of Singapore and Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn and Thammasat Universities. His book, The King and the Consul, is the culmination of several years study.
