Let’s cool off by listening to Kaidan
Have you heard of “Kaidan” ?
Japanese classical tale about ghosts.
I think it’s normally counted as traditional sort of literature, but it’s still popular today among Japanese young and old to listen to those, recited by a professional reader or actor in a dark room with spooky atmosphere in order to feel chill as an event for hot season.
In brief, one of the Japanese summer time attractions.
Here’s a chance for non native Japanese speakers to have this experience, as this is an event of reading Kaidan in English.
The below is the detail of the event, translated from its official page.
You need to book a seat by yourself, whose price is 3,500 yen.
Please see the link for the reservation, you need to fill in your name, email address and telephone number.
If you have difficulty in reading the reservation form, please let me know.
I guess this might be an interesting occasion for Japanese, as well.
I’ll come to see if my English comprehension ability is good enough to be able to feel scared.
As the venue is small and the number of the seats are limited, I recommend you to hurry if you are interested.
The theme of the live reading event this year is “Kaidan”, Japanese classic ghost story !
It will be delivered by Yuko Aotani, English communication instructor and former NHK World English Caster.
Violinist Kita Naoya and Biwa (Japanese lute) player Yuko Mizushima will join to make the recitation even more thrilling.
Pieces of work to be read in English are Koizumi Yakumo's "Snow Woman" and "Earless Hoichi" and Edogawa Ranpo's "A rotter’s Love".
