Book Group Meeting.
Greetings fellow bookworms,
Note for prospective members: though our meetings are conducted in English, participants are encouraged to read literary works in a language of their choice.
At this meeting we'll be talking about García Márquez´short story, “No one writes to the Colonel”
"The story of an impoverished, retired colonel, veteran of the Colombian Thousand Days' War, who still hopes to receive the pension he was promised fifteen years earlier. He lives with his wife in a small village under martial law. The action opens with the colonel preparing to go to the funeral of a town musician whose death is notable because he was the first to die from natural causes in many years. The novel is set during the years of "La Violencia" in Colombia, when censorship prevails." Wikip
The English version can be downloaded PDF, or heard via audiobook on YouTube. Protected content
The Spanish language printed version can be obtained in local bookstores. The work is also available in audiobook, and Carlos Saura´s play adaptation on YouTube. Protected content
In conjunction with the reading, group members are invited to attend the Spanish language play adaptation of "Colonel" at Malaga´s Teatro Cervantes on Sun 12 Jan 19:00. Everyone is asked to get their tickets ASAP; they're going fast.
