HIGHLIGHTS

Visit the ruins of the ancient Berkhamsted Castle

See the Frithsden Beeches (used as a location in films and TV shows)

Walk though the Golden Valley - landscaped by Capability Brown

Witness some glorious views across the Ridgeway

This walk will be led by Simon & Amit. External hike leaders

BERKHAMSTED CASTLE

Starting in Berkhamsted we'll walk to Berkhamsted Castle and visit the substantial remains of a strong and important motte-and-bailey castle dating from the 11th to 15th centuries, with surrounding walls, ditches and earthworks. Richard Earl of Cornwall added a 13th-century palace complex.

FRITHSDEN BEECHES

We then go up the hill to the Frithsden beeches. As well as being a spectacular sight, ‘The Beeches’ is an important area for nature conservation. This particular habitat has evolved due to pollarding, a form of woodland management where the branches were regularly cut from the trees to use as firewood

THE GOLDEN VALLEY

We then walk through ancient woodlands to the Golden Valley. The Golden Valley is one of the finest areas of the Ashridge Estate, and is a nod to its aristocratic past. This feature was built by celebrated landscape architect 'Capability' Brown between Protected content highlight the impressive grounds of Ashridge House.

ASHRIDGE CENTRE

We then meander our way to the Ashridge visitors centre for a well deserved cafe stop

LUNCH BREAK: You can eat at the cafe or bring a packed lunch with you. Lunch break will be about 45 minutes.

THE RIDGEWAY

Our walk then follows the famous Ridgeway walking in the footsteps of travellers that had traversed these paths Protected content ago finally ending in Tring.
