The Opening of Design Exhibition: 100 Years of De Stijl
The Embassy of The Kingdom of Netherland and Erasmus Huis Jakarta present:
His Excellency Rob Swartbol, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Yolanda van de Berg, Curator Centraal Museum
The Utrecht Rietveld Schröder House is the first house designed by Gerrit Rietveld and built on De Stijl principles. It was radical and completely new as if an UFO had landed at Utrecht’s border.
The exhibition shows life and work of Rietveld from the late 10s till early 30s when the magazine De Stijl was active and Utrecht was flourishing. It shows how De Stijl ideas got into Rietveld’s work and life. It tells the story about his contacts in Utrecht and around. With also a focus on his important relationship with Truus Schröder without whom the house would have never existed. Works by e.g. Van Eesteren, Van Doesburg, Wils, Van De Leck and Van ‘t Hoff are connected to Rietveld’s work.
