None other than screen legend Stanley Kubrick praised this nowadays half-forgotten movie in clear words: "I have seen it five times, and the subtlety, taste and intelligence of your performance is more striking on each occasion." The performance so highly praised here is by Oskar Werner, one of the most well-known and influential Austrian actors during the post World War II era: Medical orderly Karl Maurer is arrested by U.S. soldiers in the winter of Protected content and decides to fight against National Socialism as an anti-fascist agent under the code name "Happy". Filming takes place on location in West Germany, where bombed-out ruins can still be seen, giving DECISION BEFORE DAWN an extraordinary look. For Oskar Werner, it is the first Hollywood film that not only becomes an international success, but also earns him much recognition. Darryl F. Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, also recognized his extraordinary talent and offered him a seven-year contract. But Werner turns down the roles offered to him and lives up to his growing reputation as a "difficult star". Next to him you will see an all star cast of German and Austrian actors - among them Gert Fröbe, best known for his role as the villain in James Bond’s “Goldfinger”. The movie is shown in the original English version, no subtitles.
