Sketching in Ventigmilia: Markets and Churches
Let's visit Ventigmilia where as well as stocking up on tasty Italian goodies, we can sketch in the lovely little old town across the river. I will be sketching by the old Roman Catholic church. You are very welcome to try your hand at drawing and I will bring paper and pencils for anyone who would like to have a go.
Ventigmilia is an interesting historical town, formerly the ancient capital of a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until it was defeated in Protected content . Its ancient medieval city centre, is perched on a hill overlooking the new town.
The present Romanesque Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta has an 11th-century baptistery, and is the main church of the present Diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo. It too was built on the ruins of an earlier Lombard church, which in turn was on the site of a Roman building.
Trains take under an hour from Nice Ville and the 09:06 departure arrives at 10:02. It is a fifteen minute walk down across the river and up to the cathedral. For early birds who want a head start sketching, (departures from Nice 07:08 and 08:06 arriving 08:03 and 09:02), I plan to be there by 9am.
There are many restaurants in Ventigmilia, but my favourite is Osteria Consani that serves good local Ligurian meals (mains about 12€). Please confirm by Friday 4th if you would like to have lunch, so I can reserve a table. As they are very popular, unless you confirm in advance, there is no guarantee they will be able to fit us all in.
