Cullinan Underground Mine Tour
The underground mine tour is a once in a lifetime experience that you will not find elsewhere. If you’re out for an adventure, the underground tour is definitely it. We’ve done it twice before and it was hugely popular, so let’s go again … yep, that’s us in the photo. Below, I reproduce the original description written by Wayne Stasinowsky:
1,200 million years ago, a violent but brief eruption occurred at Cullinan, which brought diamonds from deep (>200km) in the Earth to near the surface. This rich prize remained unnoticed until Protected content ago when the Cullinan Mine was first pegged. The Cullinan Mine has produced some of the world’s best and biggest diamonds. The largest was the Cullinan Diamond, which was 3,106 carats and was cut into several large diamonds. The largest two, the Great Star of Africa Protected content and the Lesser Star of Africa are now in the English crown jewels.
We now have the rare opportunity to go underground to see how the diamonds are currently being extracted. No other operating diamond mine in the world will allow underground visitors so we are in a very privileged position.
We will gather at the Protected content and be kitted out with mine gear: overalls, rubber safety boots, hard hat and belt. You can bring your own socks or use the mine ones. Later we will go to the mine area and get a battery (worn on the belt) and lamp, which you can either fit on your helmet or carry around your neck.
Before the tour, we will watch a video and the guide will give us a brief introduction in the museum and mine. We will then go to the mine, get our lamps and head to the headframe. We will go down in the cage with the regular miners to the 800m level (i.e. 800m below surface). We will then walk around while the guide (a former miner at Cullinan) describes the various processes and machinery.
This is an operating mine so you should do what the guide says for your own safety. The tour will take about Protected content underground with limited toilets. Cameras are welcome on the tour -- just make sure you don't flash into the eyes of anyone, particularly mine workers. You will be under security surveillance and you will not be allowed to pick up anything regardless of whether it has a diamond or not.
Finally when you come back up in the cage, you will go out through the Cullinan diamond shop where you can see diamonds faceted with Cullinan’s patented star facet pattern and other diamond jewellery. If there is time you can then walk around the village looking at craft and jewellery shops. There are plenty of cafés to have breakfast if you get there early enough.
We should get back in time to have a late lunch at one of the cafés and discuss our adventure.
Easy-piecy 'cause you can pay on arrival with cash or card.
