Hennops Hiking Trails
Its colourful, varied terrain along the Krodilbergs River with its bridges, rocky climbs, and beautiful viewpoints makes this my favourite hiking spot and definitely worth a revisit.
The Hennops is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Gauteng. It has a lot to offer with highlights including a suspension bridge, an old mine, caves, ruins and a cableway to get across the river. A variety of game can be viewed, namely Zebra, Gnu, Impala, Blesbok, Kudu, and Zonkiey. Also, the indigenous trees along the river, the gorges, and plateau areas make this an outstanding area for bird life.
ROUTES & DISTANCES
See the map under photos: possible routes are the 5 km Zebra Route Protected content 16); the 2.5 km Dassie Route (1 to 6); or the remaining 9.5 km Krokodilsbergs Route (7 to 13). You can end the hike and relax at Hadeda Camp after each route, so the possible distances are 5 km (Zebra), 7.5 km (Dassie), and 9.5 to 12 km (Krokodilberg). This way, this is a hike for everyone.
DIFFICULTY & GEAR
The shorter routes are really easy, the longer one moderate. It's essential to bring at least two litres of water, a strong pair of walking shoes or hiking boots, a hat, light clothes, sunblock, an energizing snack, an emergency plastic poncho in the event of showers, and a swim suit if you’d like to use the pool afterwards.
