“Sublime … many of the year’s best films feature female protagonists who are resolved to live on their own terms, and My Happy Family ranks right alongside them. It deserves to not get lost in the awards season hysteria.”—RogerEbert.com
On the evening of her 52nd birthday, Georgian literature teacher Manana announces that she is leaving home. For 30 years, Manana has shared a three-bedroom flat in Tbilisi with her husband, parents, two grown children, and son-in-law, perennially tending to the needs of others who take her for granted. When she packs her suitcase and moves into her own apartment, Manana’s family is utterly bewildered, but Manana insists she owes them no explanation. The co-directors behind In Bloom Protected content , a revelatory tale of female friendship, evocatively depict a woman taking control of her identity and happiness.
